We read in Matthew 16:13-18 Jesus is asking His disciples who do people say that he is…Who is this man?…
There was many opinions about who Jesus is among the people of his day, much like there is of him in our time. People still question and wonder who he is…Some say he is a prophet, some a good teacher…
But Jesus asks the question: “Who do YOU say that I am? With that question comes a deep consideration of who He is…and we see that those who are spiritually enlightened and given a revelation of who he is are the only ones who will understand and comprehend who he really is.
Peter was asked this same question and he answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus commends him saying, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.” It only comes from God.
This is the rock Jesus refers to shortly after Peter’s declaration…”upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it”
I love how the Greek word Rock is translated here as “Bedrock“…It is NOT Peter himself who is the rock, it is the revelation of who the Christ is is the bedrock which he will build his church..The foundation. Christ is the corner stone of that foundation. God laid the foundation and Christ was placed as the corner stone of this foundation. Now as we accept this same revelation from God, we become living stones,(1 Peter 2:4-5) that make up the rest of that building. This building is not a temporary building made with hands on earth, but a spiritual temple which Christ is the chief cornerstone of.
This is the good news that God brought us all with the announcement of His birth in Bethlehem. His star still shines to every heart in hopes that all may open to Him and receive His love and message.
So the good news is the foundation or bedrock of who the Christ is…It is a gift from God. But it is only given to those who God chooses to give it to. Yes it is a free gift, but it requires something. It requires Faith and faith only comes to an open heart. Faith only comes from God…It also is a gift from God. But only received by those who God has ordained and chosen. It all is a matter of the heart.
God is looking for those who will receive his word. His word is his son, the Christ. But because of hardness of heart or those who are consumed by this world and its selfishly driven activities miss taking part in God’s plan of redemption. John 8:37 shows us they had no place for his word. Quite the same as trying to plant a seed in rocks…It doesn’t work.
God break up the hardness in our hearts and make our hearts soft and pliable and ready to receive your word so we all can proclaim, “You are the Christ, the son of God” in our hearts and mouths. Then we can become living stones for the Master to spread his message also…Amen?
